Emotional Intelligence also known as EQ – Emotional Quotient, was first proposed as a theory in the field of psychology during the 1980’s. The concept gained momentum rapidly and was popularised in Daniel Goleman’s 1995 groundbreaking book, ‘Emotional Intelligence: Why it can Matter more that IQ’. (Wicks, et.al, 2014)
Whilst several models of emotional intelligence emerged, Goleman’s model, based on skills and competencies, created a workable blueprint that directly improved personal skills in relationship management, self-awareness and self-management. (Wicks, et.al, 2014). Goleman defines emotional intelligence as:
“Understanding one’s own feelings, empathy for the feeling of others and the regulation of emotion in a way that enhances living.” (Goleman, 2005)
and further outlines the five domains of ‘EQ’, in summary;
Self-Awareness – knowing your emotions
Self-Regulation – managing your emotions
Motivation – motivating yourself
Empathy – recognising & understanding other people’s emotions
Socials Skills – managing relationships
(Cenere, et al., 2015)
(Goleman, 2012)
As the awareness of Emotional Intelligence grew, the benefits of it’s application (regardless of the model) became evident and spread rapidly into sectors that’s effectiveness relied upon human interaction, communication and relationships.
As a Police Officer applying ‘Emotional Intelligence’ principles was critical not only for professional effectiveness, but ultimate wellbeing. Clint Grossmann, ex Police Officer, shares his experience;
“On a daily basis I came face to face with people who wanted to injure, abuse and even kill me. I learned through Emotional Intelligence training that other peoples behaviour was driven by their emotions and view of the world.”
“I learned this was not a personal attack on me as a person, and I learned to react in a way that did not inflame the situation but control it. As important, I learned to know, understand and manage my emotions, not to bring them home and effect those closest to me.”
