The politics of fear, hate and division is alive again in Australia.  Politicians from all sides were left reeling after Senator Pauline Hanson’s maiden speech to parliament, 20 years after her first controversial speech.

Twenty years on and nothing much has changed, like all of us Hanson is bit older but none the wiser.  Her  rhetoric has not changed, bar the swapping of racial focus and comment from Asians to Muslims. Continue reading

Tis’ the season for giving … the silent bribery confronting Australian politics

Robert Cialdini is a world authority on the study of influence.  In his book ‘Influence – the Psychology of Persuasion’ Cialdini (2004) outlines the six core principles of persuasion or why people comply with requests (Influence at work, 2015).

The first principle is Reciprocation, Cialdini explains “The rule says that we should try to repay, in kind, what another person has provided us.” (Influence at Work, 2015).  As way of example, if a Christmas card or gift is received from another, there is an automatic impulsion to send them a card or gift of equal value. Australia’s Double Shame …

Within ten hours of the airing of a Four Corner’s (Meldrum-Hanna, 2016) investigative report into the Northern Territories Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre, the Prime Minister announced a Royal Commission (Turnbull, 2016).

The program called Australia’s Shame showed shocking images and never seen before video footage that horrified the nation. Human rights organisations, government sectors and the public were united in their calls for immediate federal government intervention. (Brook, 2016) (Laundry & Triggs, 2016). Continue reading

The choke that cost taxpayers Millions.

It is almost inconceivable that in this day of advanced psychological practices and training in sports that a professional athlete can ‘choke’.

That is what Australians witnessed as world record holder and hot favourite Cate Campbell came in at sixth place in her 100m final.  Campbell described her performance as “the greatest choke in Olympic history”. (Clark & Larkin, 2016) Continue reading

Happy #Census Night

Tonight is census night.  The lead up to the 2016 census has been steeped in controversy creating a great divide in federal politics.

Taking place every five years, this year’s compulsory census is Australia’s inaugural digital survey. The data collected by the Australian Bureau of Statistics will for the first time will be held for 4 years instead of the previous 18 months. (Miletic & Levy, 2016)

These changes have seen a backlash from some politicians claiming that privacy and security of sensitive data cannot be guaranteed. Continue reading
